Champions League Semifinal: 2010 final rematch getting closer

By Olaf Goldbecker

On May 20, 2010, German club Turbine Potsdam won the Champions League in penalty shootout against French side Olympique Lyonnais. After the first matches of the 2011 semifinals, a rematch of this final seems to be most likely.

In an inner-German matchup, Turbine Potsdam traveled to FCR Duisburg.  Surprisingly, Duisburg – struggling at the end of the season – was the more active team. Yet it was Turbine Potsdam that opened the scoring after a quarter hour in front of a 3,200 in attendance. Isabel Kerschowski cared for the lead of the cup defender. Duisburg was not shocked, and reacted with the equalizer from top striker Inka Grings after 32 minutes. Japanese international Yuki Nagasato directly replied only three minutes later to give Potsdam the lead again. Although, this did not last long. Jennifer Oster tied the game short before halftime, 2-2, which also was the final score, and that gave Potsdam the road goals advantage.

In the second semifinal, Olympique Lyonnais made use of the home advantage and defeated Arsenal, 2-0. Two quick goals by Swede Lotta Schelin knocked the English team out. Olympique, number 1 in the European club ranking, was the dominant team almost throughout the entire game and carries a very solid lead into the road game in the English capital.
