The W-League season kicks off in just five weeks, and teams continue to stack their rosters. Friday, the Vancouver Whitecaps announced the signing of UCLA forward Sydney Leroux. The 20-year-old from Surrey, British Columbia, Canada led the UCLA Bruins in scoring this season as a junior with 13 goals and 27 points. A member of the 2008 U.S. Women’s National Team that won the 2008 U-20 World Cup, Leroux recently earned her first cap with the full national squad. She debuted at the Four Nations Tournament in January in China. This is Leroux’s second stint with the Whitecaps. She previously was a member of the Whitecaps as a 15-year-old.
Leroux is a proven scorer. As a sophomore in the fall of 2009, Leroux set a single-season school record with 23 goals. As a freshman, she tallied five goals and six assists. Considered a first-round draft pick in next year’s WPS Draft, Leroux joins a Whitecaps team that already includes keeper Erin McNulty, defender Lexi Marton, and forwards Carrie Patterson and Tiffany Weimer.
